[cs=2] [style=text-align: center; font-family: century gothic; font-size: 16px; border-bottom: solid 2px #222222; margin-bottom: 4px; text-transform: center;]FULL NAME Crabapple Holdfast "the Shield" ORIGINS Growing up with Baldr, Crabapple remembers the times when dragons were allies of the people, but trusted in the wisdom of Hrothgar when the decision was made to leave them entirely. Crabapple's father had previously been training the ViTs of Hysteria in the ways of war, and now, these were expanded to knowing the ways against dragons. Purging the wilds around the village proved a painful experience for the young warrior, and he began to shun the use of bladed weapons, with some effort being made to dispose of his opponents quietly. When training against dragons came, Crabapple found his calling when the most important piece of equipment was named: the shield. He figured, if one is good, two are better, and hefted one in each arm, quickly adjusting to the weight and feel of each of them. He'd soon eschew anything but his shields, and began to use his considerable size to his advantage, pushing opponents out of the way, or down onto the ground. With dragonfire, it didn't always turn out well for the teenager, and a certain nadder had a habit nicking his shields whenever she turned up. Obviously, this eased his transition into the more anti-dragon camp, as well as teaching him to find ways of safeguarding his beloved bucklers. First attempts at stockpiling failed when he found them scattered across the island, and his own lock busted. Later, he moved to getting people across the island to hide them, keeping his own on his person... These, too, mysteriously disappeared, until young Crabapple finally learned to bury them in different caches, and keep his own close enough that they wouldn't fly away without him. This constant harassment has actually proved a benefit in later years, as he's always kept his shields nearby, and never finds himself disarmed. Age works its wonders on all, and as Crabapple grew, he continued to be on the bigger side of the villagers, and focused more and more on applying that strength in battle. But when the battle's over and the lucky ones are shipped (literally) off to Valhalla, what's left for the warriors who stay behind? Honestly, the only thing Crabby knew how to do was beat things, and so he continued in that vein, settling disputes by the virtue of his arm, and generally following Hrothgar's orders. His role as a peacekeeper has been commonly respected, and it often keeps him in the village when Baldr is away dealing with external threats. This has served him well, recently, as he has made a family with a certain dark-eyed beauty of the town, Annike, and had a son with her, Igor. He dotes on the babe, and his ability to stay in town has enabled that further. Though earlier on friendly terms with Baldr, Crabapple has become increasingly reticent as of late, not liking that Baldr seems to be on his own a bit, even though it proved effective in the last war. [style=text-align: center; font-family: century gothic; font-size: 16px; border-bottom: solid 2px #222222; margin-bottom: 4px; text-transform: center;]OVERALL PERSONALITY
There are distinct moods for Crabapple. When he's in "defender" mode, everything is blunt, to the point, and almost brutal in its simplicity. He'll address the issue without giving much thought to the reasoning behind it, caring only for an action-based solution. In training, it's much the same. There's little sympathy for those warriors he takes under his wing, as he's going to be less fatal to them than the enemy. He's of the opinion that tears ought to be fought past to attain true toughness and strength.
Catch him at home, however, and things change. He'll often be heard crooning deeply to Igor at nights when the babe wakes, and many of the neighbors were concerned for a while that Annike was entertaining lovers in Crabapple's absence! His interactions with his wife are always gentle and caring, all the more so because he admits his own mortality to her alone.
Odin forbid you catch him when he's dealing with a headache. Patience drops to zero, and he's liable to crack both heads together just to shut the complainers up. He's aware that it negatively affects the way he works, but doesn't want to have to admit such to anyone, especially Baldr.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
A lifetime of carrying shields daily has caused Crabapple to be quite bulky, almost as wide as he is tall. Short blonde hair, and a sadly short, though thick, beard, are trademarks. Only recently has the beard actually come in, and it's still rather noticable that his upper lip gets quite drafty in the winter. His blue eyes tend to look very hard, softening in the presence of family.
