A Chance Missed (Beow)

[Summer & Fireworm]

DATE & TIME : 10/6 After war
WEATHER CONDITIONS : Early morning, so some slight dew and damp air.
CHARACTERS INVOLVED : Summer, Fireworm, Beow, and Calypso (if you want)

Summer walked into the forest. It had been awhile since she last stepped foot in here. The war had taken a lot out of everyone. Even if she didn’t hav a major part in it, she still had a part. The village was running low on food so she had volunteered to go and hunt. With her trusty bow and arrows on her back she had walked out of the village. Fireworm had followed her as far as the dragon could, but the forest did get dense very quickly. So after half an hour of walking the Nightmare had to stop in a clearing and wait for Summer to return to her.

As she continued walking, she stayed as quiet as physically possible. Each step she made tried to be super delicate. But when a twig snapped under her foot she couldn’t help but curse softly and flinch. She didn’t want to walk too far into the forest and then have to drag the deer back to Fireworm by herself. As she walked she looked to the trees for a place where she could sit comfortably, watch the ground below for animals, and be hidden from anything’s sight. When she walked for another ten minutes, she came across the perfect tree. Grasping a hold of the bark and lumps hanging off of it, she started to hoist herself up. Little by little until she got to the branch that looked comfortable at which she made a nice spot for herself. She sat down, her back against the tree with her legs dangling, straddling, the branch.

Her hands reached behind her as she grabbed the bow to pull it in front of her. Her hands ran along the smooth wood remembering the day her mother and father carved it for her. It had done her well. The arrows stayed on her back but she grabbed one and notched it into place on the bow. She let the sting loose and waited. It seemed like hours had passed by, but since she had no need to get down, from falling asleep, bathroom, or boredom, in reality only a couple minutes had passed. She had been about to lean against the tree and close her eyes when she heard a noise. A deer came walking into her view. The coat looked healthy; as it bent its head down to eat some of the dew ridden grass, Summer pulled the bow string taunt.

She breathed softly before releasing it. Right before she did though, she heard a snap. Startled the deer ran into the cover of the bushes. Summer cursed again and slowly let go of the string until the arrow and bow rested in her lap. She saw a boy about her age walk into view. ”Really!? I was just about to get my first deer of the day until you startled it off!” She hopped down from the tree putting the arrow back and the bow across her back. She walked up to the boy and glared him in the eyes, even though she had to look up since he was about 4 inches taller than she, waiting what he had to say.

Beow's bare feet flew across the leaf-strewn forest floor as he sprinted through the woods. He gripped his tall, strong wooden staff and he ran along. The weather for the day had promise to be perfect as the sun began it's slow journey into the heights of the sky. The wind was perfect for flying, which Calypso, his dragon, had seemed to take full advantage of. She had taken her leave earlier yet this morning and the Galewing was presumably was off having a nice solo flight. So while his dragon got some alone time, Beow had decided to do the same. 

He ran with speed, dodging roots and rocks as he went along. The soles of his feet gripped the ground below as he whipped around tight corners and leapt lithely over fallen tree trunks. He felt absolutely free, just the way he liked it. No responsibility. Even after years of living on his own, he felt increasingly jubilant every passing day that he didn't live in the village. He wondered if he would have ever had this blissful opportunity if he hadn't been forced to leave. Somehow, in the long run, things had worked out for the orphan boy.

Now, as Beow fled from nothing, she basked in the bliss of his freedom. This he knew: the world had moved into the summer months of the year. the temperature was rising, sending small animals scuttling into their burrows during the heat of the day. The world was preparing for the autumn, where the weather would once again have a chill as leaves changed colors and fell every day from their places in the treetops. 

It was this train of thought that was interrupted.

As Beow sped into a clearing, he was bombarded by some village female about his own age. She was wearing hunting clothing and carrying a bow and quiver. She shouted out at him- something about a deer. Rather taken aback, he raised his staff across his chest where an end of the wooden rod rested in each hand. As she stared angrily at him, he scowled for a moment as she spoke to her, voice heavy with sarcasm:

Summer continued to glare at him until he spoke. When he did, her gaze softened, but only slightly. ” Well! Good morning to you, also!!!” She heard the heavy sarcasm coming off his voice, a key to her not answering. She huffed out a bit as she really took in his appearance. With a quick glance she could see he was an outsider. Or an outcast. Really he could be any, but she wasn’t scared. Why would she? It’s not like he would hurt her. Plus if she so much as gave a small scream Fireworm would be over the forest looking for her in an instant. No one wanted an angry Monstrous Nightmare on their hands now did they! She gave him another once over and noticed he was wearing no shoes. The staff that he held up made him look like he was protecting himself just in case Summer attacked.

Not wanting a kind of mix up that could get either of them hurt, Summer took a couple steps back so neither or them seemed as threatened by one another. She kept her eye on him as she did though. One false movement and she would have the small dagger that was hid in her boot whipped out. ”Yeah, well next time you’re running through here why don’t you be a little more careful. I could’ve killed you if my arrow had shot out or if I would’ve flinched and made it go in another direction. These woods aren’t just yours you know.” Although Summer’s face no longer held the anger that it held moments ago, it was still inside her which made her words come out like venom as they also seeped sarcasm. ”What am I going to do now? Now that the deer know I’m over here they are going to keep away from this area. This whole trip was pretty much a bust.”

She turned away for a moment looking at a spot on a tree. Her mind was thinking through all the options that she had today. She wouldn’t mind if this guy kept her company, although she would have to keep a watch on him. If he was an outsider, Asther might want to know about him. But only if he seemed off. If he stayed cool and collected, well, Summer didn’t have to tell her. She turned around looking as if she was looking at him when really she was looking at the forest behind him. Her face still set with a complete thought process.
