He was sheltered by his mother (the father had left before his birth) and fed in a cave near Madman’s Gully. His mother left him when he reached 50 years due to abandonment as his mother wanted a more independent life, as most Lakewings are famous for. Hydrose (not named at this point) made a living in the small freshwater streams and abandoned fishermen’s catches around them for the next century or so as he approached adolescence. It was during this time that he came to be known to the residents of Berk – particularly the fishermen, and was hunted – as a common or garden dragon (the type of dragon they initially believed him to be). However unlike the Common or garden dragons, lacewings are notoriously intelligent and quite an intuitive species and did not fall for the largely obvious traps or ambushes set by Vikings, only infuriating them to search him more increasingly, less so believing him to be a common or garden, but still wanting him as a prize became a goal for many Vikings coming of age to prove their worthiness to the tribe. This caused him to be nearly caught on one stage by a Viking, who gave him the name ‘Hydrose’ when he missed the killing blow, allowing (now named) Hydrose to escape and hide. Since then, over the 85 years that followed Hydrose has remained uncaught, and has largely dropped out of memory by the majority of the Viking population, except for the odd tale or folklore story on Friday evenings. Hydrose now lives a solitary lifestyle away from Vikings in a canyon known now as ‘Toothless Canyon’. GENDER: Male BREED & STANDING: Wild, [ Lakewing ] A medium-length dragon that commonly lives in or near large lakes or rivers, they usually follow the river downstream to find other deltas or tributaries and follow them up to the source to search for potential mates, or to find other sources of food via land, commonly Viking fish catches or other riverside mammals. OVERALL PERSONALITY: Hydrose is a calm, intuitive, resourceful, yet confident dragon. He is slow to anger, but when he is eventually enraged, is a force to be reckoned with. He is quite happy to respect the Viking boundaries as long as they respect his own, and over the years they usually have. As Hydrose is a predominately solitary species of dragon, this solitary nature transfers over to his own personality, as hinted earlier – preferring to avoid human contact, but if unavoidable or via random meetings, Hydrose is one of the few dragon species that will not attack on site, preferring to mainly observe or ignore whichever human is encroaching on his territory. However, it is also this solitary nature that makes Hydrose relatively inexperienced in dealing with Vikings (despite having been hunted by some of them in the past, he has had little real pursuit or been hunted by them, and underestimates the Vikings because of this. He instead prefers to hide in the water, or if necessary (i.e. Vikings getting really quite close / bold) will spray them and discourage them from coming back. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The Lakewing species as a whole: They are around 15 feet long, nose to tail tip, and stand averagely at 9-10 feet tall. They have dappled white/grey stomach plates that reach from under its jaw to the end of the tail. It has strong arms and legs, useful for swimming and catching prey, with the addition of hooked claws and rough ‘pads’ on its feet. It is able to fly short distances on its wings, but cannot support extended flight; as such it prefers a combination of gliding and predominately running to get around. ABILITIES: He can spray large accurate jets of an oily, flammable and highly toxic (depending on what he has recently eaten) liquid substance from his mouth, like most Lakewings his expelled streams of liquid breath are limited at around 8 ‘sprays’ commonly, but the maximum amount they can ‘fire’ when they are in water is currently unknown due to most Lakewings having seen the recorder by then and chasing them off or leaving the area. These jets of liquid are usually surprisingly accurate and can sting (initial impact of the toxin) to the point of short term paralysis in that area of the body, again depending on what he has recently eaten – at worst skin would be irreparably damaged, and could be burnt off, thus allowing the harmful substance to enter the bloodstream killing the offender relatively quickly, Hydrose is also perfectly capable of biting or slashing a limb off with his very sharp teeth and claws, or knocking an average Viking out cold with a well placed tail slam i.e. the head or upper torso. Hydrose also behaves similar to a crocodile in that he prefers to stun foes with his breath, before dragging them into the water and drowning them. Nothing could catch him here in the water. That had tried so far anyway the dragon pondered. The silt filled depths proved no burden to his adapted eyesight, his gaze cut through the particulated water like two searchlights in the dark. Looking, searching for the large Pike he had seen ambushing a small fish of some sort earlier as he had been sunning himself on a large rock that overlooked the lake. There! A small flicker of movement in the periphery of his telescopic vision, a grey silhouette rushing into the silty clouds near the shallows. He rushed forwards, propelled by his large tail and streamlined body, accelerating quickly towards his prey, the pike caught a brief glimpse of him and sped off, equally quickly in acceleration, streaking away into the silty clouds. However he was gaining. He opened his maw to snap down on the pike, the pike still trying to evade him but without luck, as Hydrose was matching every twist and turn it could pull. When suddenly out of the blue, a small frog swam into his path, an avalanche of pure fear and adrenaline came over Hydrose, he immediately turned upwards and sped out of the water – opening his previously lowered and swept back wings and glided to the shore line, landing heavily as customary to his gliding nature – panting quickly and eyes narrowed to a thin slit looking back at the water. The frog came hopping out before settling on a nearby tuft of grass, eyeing him – as if to determine whether it was worth the effort in hopping after the dragon to get him off his territory. Hydrose hissed as menacingly as he could, as he slowly backed away wings extended, tail swishing back and forth like a smooth scaled pendulum. He leapt around and up to his nearby cave that overlooked the area. Hissing again in the rough direction of the offending frog to give himself some sense of security he headed towards the back of the cave, sniffing briefly at a piece of weed on the floor before grabbing a large carp and settling down to chew on it, ears pricked towards the faint distant sound of ringing iron – the Vikings are up to something again he thought before gulping down the carp and laid down, crossing his forelegs and resting his pointed chin upon them, gazing out at the world. |
