[Finn & Naiya]

ORIGINS Finn was an average looking child born on Berk on the chilly morning of February 25th. His mother was a shepherdess, an important job considering their sheep and cattle were being carried away less and less by dragons, resulting in a high number of the animals suddenly being born. His father was a fisherman, a job also affected by the taming of dragons as the beasts' favorite food was fish and so plenty of the resource was needed now. Finn, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with either of these professions, even from a young age. He showed skill in tinkering...Building things with little bits of wood and metal, carving little figurines and putting together little toys for himself. At the age of 10 years old, Finn was accepted as the blacksmith's apprentice. Most of Finn's work there included making saddles for dragons and coming up with new designs that were meant to improve how the saddles fit on different dragons and how comfortable but practical they were, but usually the designs didn't make much sense as to how they actually fit on the dragon because Finn could never get ahold of a dragon to test them on. When Finn was 12 he was out on a small boat with his father as they did a little fishing together. They were out deep and a tidal class dragon managed to bump their boat, rocking it violently and sending Finn overboard. The boy, who couldn't swim very well, began to sink below the surface out of reach of his father. The tidal dragon that had hit the boat turned and began swimming toward the boy who looked like a possible meal when it was suddenly attacked by what appeared to be another dragon. The tidal dragon finally fell limp and began to sink in the water while the dragon who'd attacked and evidently killed it swam toward Finn. The boy was unconscious by now, and the strange dragon plucked him out of the water and dumped him back on his boat just in time for his father to save his life. The dragon lingered for a few moments longer, and after a thankful gaze from Finn's father it swam away. A few days later, Finn was in the forest near the water, carving a small chunk of wood into a tiny Nightmare, when he heard a splash and saw a large, brown dragon emerging from the deep blue waves. It stared at him with calculating eyes before it approached him, sniffed him, and then settled down beside him. Finn cautiously proceeded to carve his tiny dragon figurine, and was soon able to relax as the dragon got back up and turned its attention to the water once more. It settled in the shallows, fanning its wings above it and parting its jaws, clearly with intention of cooling itself off. He couldn't blame it. All that fur must be hot. Good for most of the year but not now in the warmest months on berk. Soon Finn became curious and approached the dragon who seemed unperturbed by him. He noticed then the prominent, tusk-like canine teeth jutting down from its upper jaw, clear mark that it was a Sabertoothed dragon. Noting that it didn't have another set of saber teeth jutting up from its bottom jaw, he deduced that this dragon was female. Perhaps this explained her more docile nature around him? Maybe she recognized him as a human young and had decided not to hurt him and in fact saved him due to some lingering maternal instinct? After removing his boots and rolling up his pants, the boy entered the water and waded toward the dragon who continued to act as if he were not there. Finally he reached her and placed a hand on her shoulder. He felt the muscle beneath his hand and beneath the soft silky fur shiver, and then looked up to see blue eyes staring into his own brown. Her gaze was not hostile but perhaps even fond? To put it simply, Finn knew that this was the dragon he was meant to ride. She was practically offering herself up to him. It was as if she was just asking to be taken home and saddled up...And that was exactly what Finn did, introducing the wild dragon to his parents, although his mother was not all that keen on allowing him to keep the dragon as it was just...A wild dragon after all. But after the circumstances of their first meaning was explained to her, she finally, reluctantly, agreed. Since then Finn and the dragon, named Navi, have become an inseperable pair. From the day he first met her, Finn has never been able to figure exactly why the dragon decided to save his life and choose him as her rider, but knows that it will remain a mystery even now, five years after their first meeting, at seventeen years old. ▪ Finn and Naiya were out in the forest one day when they came across another dragon, a Gronkle. Finn is ashamed to say he was defeated by the beast and was about to become dragon chow when Naiya found him(she'd been stalking a deer) and drove away the Gronkle. He has claw scars on his left side and right shoulder, as well as his lower back to prove it, but has made it a point never to show anyone. He's ashamed because he thinks his peers would make fun of him for not being able to defend himself against a dragon as bumbling and clumsy as a Gronkle.
